if I have (not) love

heron

I can know all the words,
the particular jargon,
dialect, the lingua franca,

but if I have not love,
my words clang and

clatter,

all my attempts to speak
are tinged with accusation.

I’m afraid,

if I have not love,
to show you who I really am.
I hide,

behind the challenge
of the way I am, my inade-
quacies—yes, plural. They are

legion.

Yet I stagger forward,
limping sometimes, determined
if not all the way, to open up my heart
as much as I am

                               able;

to have love and
to give love too. There.

See.

It’s not so scary.

Even the smidgen I can

manage

is enough.

And yes, why a heron? No reason, except I adore herons and this one serendipitously appeared in front of me on a Warrandyte walk. Thanks too to Jo who suggested I put this on my blog.
